Regan is a go-better
Regan is a go-getter!
Regan is an orphan of 18 and he lives here in Banda Kyandazza, Uganda with his grandmother.
Both his parents died of Aids. He received HIV as “a present” at his birth. He gets antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.
One day Regan and his half-sister Betty came to my house to ask if I could provide a sponsor for Betty. I succeeded and now Betty can go to school.
Regan offered to do my garden every Saturday in return. And when he couldn’t come he always let me know very conscientiously. This is very good. Really incredible.
Before I went back to the Netherlands in March 2015, I was informed that Regan was more dead than alive. Unfortunately nobody could tell me what was wrong; why he was ill so suddenly. His grandmother could not adequately take care of him, since she has no money. Good friends saw to it that he could come to them in Jinja, where he was taken to hospital. He stayed there for at least two months.
The doctor checked him and diagnosed that Regon had contracted tuberculosis. That was the reason why he was so ill.
Recently he was discharged from hospital and he is back in the village.
Obviously he has to go back to hospital, the Family Hope Centre in Jinja, for regular check-ups. I have taken charge of him as far as possible.
When he has to go to Jinja for his check-up I go with him.
He wants to go there for his check-ups until the tuberculosis is completely gone and after that we can go to a similar hospital in Kampala, which is a shorter drive.
After his final check in Jinja we went to see friends. They gave me some money to buy food for Regan.
Regan told me that his shoulder was aching. When I accompanied him home I saw what his “bed” looked like. An old, dirty, shabby and threadbare mattress.
I was shocked and asked Nicole of Buiga Sunrise, the nursery school where the Weebale Foundation carried out the first water project, if she could provide Regan with a mattress and a blanket.
She was very willing to do so and today I have bought them for him. He is so grateful.
He has only one blouse and one pair of trousers and a pair of flip-flops. All his old clothes are still too large because he lost so much weight. I think I am going to buy clothes for him in the market.
Regan has never been a sturdy boy, but he is only 36 kilos now! He has a gigantic willpower, though.
Regan is a top guy (to use a popular word) who is very keen on going back to school and following his dream of becoming a solicitor.
